Experience from previous studies on rail, maritime and aviation transport has shown that properly evaluating energy consumption and emissions for these modes of transport is rather complex and challenging, as less information is available compared to road transport.
In fact, transport and environment models available in the European context (such as TRANS-TOOLS, TREMOVE, SCENES, ASTRA, POLES, etc.) require data on emission factors of vehicles in order to estimate the environmental impacts of the policies they simulate. Other inventories were also developed in order to produce emission data and analyse environmental impacts for rail transport, aviation and maritime navigation (e.g. TRENDS, ARTEMIS, EMS, AERO2K).
However, the condition of reliable and periodically updated source of such information for all EU Member States was not secured.
Therefore, the “EX~TREMIS” project fills this gap by bringing together the most comprehensive and up-to-date information on non-road transport vehicle emission factors and activity statistics, which together make it possible to estimate the energy consumption and emissions resulting from different transport operations.
